What is Overmolding?

Overmolding is molding two plastics together to form one part with two colors or different materials into one part. Overmolding starts by molding a single material, typically the harder material, in a mold and then ejecting it and cleaning off the gates. This part is known as the substrate and is then placed into a second mold to be molded over with a second material known as the overmold.

This process provides a complex part with two materials that are chemically bonded to each other. Examples of this type of molding are toothbrushes, surgical instruments, or power tool handles.

Benefits of Overmolding?

Great process for 2 material parts that are:

  • Lower volumes – Under 10,000 parts
  • New product development – Prototype
  • Require mechanical interlocks
